![]() I’m a huge fan Saadiq so this odd pairing of homeboy and games caught me off guard. Looks kinda dope, right? It’ll also be released on PC via Steam and on the the PlayStation 3 Network (PSN) at a later date. It’s a first person shooter powered by Unreal Engine 3 and it doesn’t look bad at all. The game is called Nexuiz and drops February 29th for about $10. And they have a game coming out shortly as part of Microsoft’s Xbox Live “ Arcade House Party” promotion. ![]() I found this out while listening to the Giant Bomb podcast this morning: Oakland’s own Raphael Saadiq (Tony! Toni! Toné!, Lucy Pearl) has a video game company called Illfonic! This kind of blows my mind. Simple, right? Nexuiz comes out on Xbox Live Arcade on February 29th for 800 Microsoft Points.Wow. Just picture the left stick like a keyboard's WASD and the right stick like a mouse. Once over that console-control hurdle, every kill, be it by head shot or rocket-to-the-chest, becomes a pleasure. With a controller, the long-lead aiming style and maneuvering through a world where characters rush across the map in seconds feels fresh. The arena-style combat is old-school, and there's a good chance you've played something similar on a PC long ago. There's a learning curve full of frustration and confusion built into this pace-changing experience. Let's hope that doesn't happen.Īn ol' fashioned match of Rocket vs. The danger with any online-only experience is that, in a month's time, the lobbies risk becoming populated by bots and metaphorical tumbleweeds. If Nexuiz builds a community of twitchy-fingered recruits, this online world of chaos could be an absolute blast for a long time to come. Kill and death stats populate almost every menu, so this definitely isn't a game about teamwork (to a certain extent) and much more about dodging bullets and staying alive (if only for a few seconds). With a score cap of 50, they're over in what feels like moments. The tiny arenas feature short cuts, secret paths, and power-ups to lower gravity or double jump, so the eight on eight matches are frenetic.
